Bringing a collective back together
The challenge
TTSP was commissioned to refurbish the1960s Civic Centre building, home to Southend-on-Sea Borough Council. The brief was to enhance the work environment, creating a space where all Southend-based council staff and partner organisations could come together under one roof.
The approach
A considered approach was required in creation of the brief, which included options, appraisals and benefit cases. To ensure the new space would effectively support employees, we included Leesman Workplace Surveys to inform the design and measure the success of implementation.
In the final phase of the project, we significantly reworked customer-contact areas and registrar facilities on the ground floor. To create a bright, open space we introduced a thermally glazed pavilion to an existing light well, creating a vibrant cafe for staff and visitors.
The result
The flexible 9,500m² working space has been refreshed and enhanced to comfortably house 1,200 staff across 1,000 work stations.
